PVC edge banding

Rich and varied colors and textures, wear-resistant, scratch-resistant, moisture-resistant, detergent-resistant, and good processing performance. ABS edge banding

The edge processing effect (especially after trimming) is usually more delicate and smooth. Suitable for high-end furniture, products with strict environmental protection requirements (such as exporting to high-end markets in Europe and the United States), products with frequent edge contact or low temperature environments.

PMMA Edge Banding

Provides top-level surface effects. It has extremely high surface hardness (close to glass) and unparalleled transparency and glossiness (excellent high-gloss effect), excellent weather resistance and anti-yellowing properties, and bright and long-lasting colors. The cost is relatively high. Mainly used for high-end furniture, display cabinets, door panels, etc.

Wood Veneer Edge Banding

Made of natural precious wood veneer (usually >0.6mm thick), with non-woven fabric or paper on the back and glued. Can be polished, dyed, painted, and integrated with solid wood furniture. Moisture resistance is weaker than synthetic materials, and needs to be matched with high-quality paint.

What is the main purpose of MDF edge banding?

The core purpose is to cover and protect the exposed edges of MDF boards. Prevent moisture and humidity from invading and causing the board to expand and deform; improve the wear resistance and impact resistance of the edges; cover the rough and porous substrate sections; provide decorative effects that match or contrast with the surface finish, significantly improving the beauty, durability and value of MDF products.

Why must MDF furniture use edge banding? Does solid wood not need it?

Yes, this is determined by the characteristics of the material. Solid wood itself has a dense structure, and the edges can be beautiful and durable after polishing. MDF is a man-made board, and its edges are pressed by wood fibers. It is porous, loose, easily absorbs moisture and deforms, and is rough and unsightly. Edge banding is the only economical, effective and beautiful solution to these problems. With environmental protection and cost considerations, MDF and other boards are increasingly used, and the demand for edge banding has also surged.

How to choose MDF edge banding of different thicknesses?

The choice depends on the use scenario and grade of the furniture:
0.4mm – 0.6mm: Economical, suitable for low-visibility, low-wear areas such as internal partitions and drawer side panels.
0.8mm – 1.0mm: The most commonly used thickness, cost-effective. Suitable for cabinet door panels, side panels, desktop sides, and mid-range furniture. Can meet most home and office needs.
1.2mm – 2.0mm: High-end/commercial grade. Provides better edge protection, fuller visual effects and higher strength. Especially recommended for kitchen and bathroom cabinets (high humidity), frequently used desktops, public area furniture, children’s furniture, and high-end custom home furnishings.
3.0mm and above: Special thickening requirements, used for specific parts that need to highlight edge shapes or withstand great impact.

What is the difference between PVC, ABS, and acrylic edge banding? Which one is the best?

There is no absolute “best”, the key depends on the demand:
PVC: The most cost-effective and widely used. Moisture-resistant, wear-resistant, and colorful. Luyao improves its performance through formula optimization (nano calcium, CPE, etc.). Suitable for most general scenarios.
ABS: Better toughness, low temperature resistance, and environmental protection, with less processing odor. Suitable for high-end furniture, strict export environmental protection requirements, low temperature environment, and high toughness requirements (such as the arc edge of children’s furniture). The cost is higher than PVC.
Acrylic (PMMA): The highest surface hardness and glossiness, excellent yellowing resistance, and good permeability. The choice of pursuing top-level high-gloss effects (such as piano paint), ultra-high wear resistance, and long-term outdoor weather resistance. The highest cost.
Veneer: Pure natural solid wood texture, can be processed twice. Suitable for high-end solid wood style furniture, attention should be paid to moisture-proof treatment.

What are the hot melt adhesives commonly used for edge banding?

EVA adhesive (ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer): The most widely used, low cost, fast bonding speed, wide operating temperature range (about 120-180°C), good adhesion to most substrates and edge banding (including veneer). Luyao’s standard products are mainly pre-coated with high-performance EVA adhesive.
PUR adhesive (moisture-cured reactive polyurethane): Super strong and long-lasting adhesion, excellent heat resistance, solvent resistance, and low temperature resistance. After curing, it forms an irreversible chemical bond. The disadvantages are high operating requirements (precise control of adhesive application amount, temperature, and pressure), high cost, and short open time. Luyao can provide PUR adhesive options for high-end needs (especially laser edge banding).

Can the edge banding be modified or torn off after it is glued on?

For edge banding that has just been glued on and uses EVA glue, if you find that the position is not correct, you can immediately reheat (hot air gun or iron) the glue layer to soften it and then carefully adjust it or tear it off and re-stick it.
For edge banding that has completely cooled and solidified (especially PUR glue), it is very difficult to remove and may damage the substrate. Usually, professional heating tools (such as hot air guns) are required to fully heat the glue layer, and then carefully pry it up and peel it off slowly. Residual glue stains can be removed with a special edge banding glue remover or carefully scraped off. It is strongly recommended to plan and test before formal edge banding.

How to deal with the glue overflowing during the edge banding process?

Hot state (best time): Before the glue has completely cooled and hardened (immediately after edge banding or while it is still hot), use a special trimming scraper or a hard plastic card (such as an old credit card) to carefully scrape off the overflow glue along the edge. The action should be fast and steady.
Cold state: If the glue has hardened:
For EVA glue: Use a hot air gun to heat it locally and soften it before scraping it off.
For PUR adhesive: very difficult to remove, may require mechanical scraping (extremely careful to avoid damaging the finish) or special strong adhesive remover (need to test whether it damages the finish).
A small amount of stubborn adhesive particles: try to carefully “pry up” the edge and tap it off.
