How to Install Plastic Edging for Plywood
Installing plastic edging for plywood is a straightforward process that enhances the durability and aesthetic appeal of your projects. Follow these steps for a successful installation:
Step 1: Measure and Cut
- Begin by measuring the sections of plywood you want to edge.
- Cut the plastic edging to the appropriate lengths, ensuring you leave extra material for adjustments if needed.
Step 2: Apply Contact Cement
- Use a brush or spray to apply contact cement to both the PVC edge tape and the plywood surface.
- Be cautious not to apply too much adhesive.
- Alternatively, you can use double-sided PSA tape on either side of the surface. For consistent application, consider using a primer machine to ensure adequate primer coverage.
Step 3: Cure the Cement
- Allow the contact cement to cure completely as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Once cured, adhere the plywood to the plastic edging. If using PSA tape, peel off the backing and stick it to the surface.
Step 4: Trim Excess Edging
- Use a utility knife, router, or edge banding trimmer to remove any excess PVC edging that extends beyond the plywood.
Step 5: Clean Up
- Carefully remove any excess contact cement using acetone.
- Ensure that the semi-gloss finish of the plywood is not damaged. If acetone is misapplied, it can cause the PVC to develop a white coating, requiring a full edge replacement.
