Edge banding tape pvc – Everything You Need to Know

Edge banding tape pvc is often included with furniture, regardless of the material used. Why is that?

Because edge banding is a vital component of furniture construction, its location may considerably increase the furniture’s endurance.

This guide, part of our “Luyao” series, will teach you the fundamentals of edge banding.

What is Edge banding tape pvc?

Let us start with the basics. Edge banding tape pvc is a rather easy process. The video below will help you better comprehend, but here’s a quick introduction to get you started.

Edge banding tape pvc is the method of concealing the raw, unfinished, and ugly edges of core materials such as plywood, particleboard, and other manufactured woods.

To ameliorate these edges, several creative people devised methods to glue various smooth materials to the rough edges, making them match the top and sides.

These small strips of material, known as edge bands, come in thicknesses ranging from 0.018 inches to 5mm and are normally offered in rolls of 250 feet.

Thicker edge banding is commonly employed in high-traffic and commercial locations due to its increased durability and impact resistance. To provide optimum impact protection, the military demands solid wood edge banding up to ⅜ inch thick.

Edge banding machines are industrial-grade equipment that apply hot melt glue or other bonding chemicals to the exposed edges of boards.

What is the purpose of Edge banding tape pvc?

Edge banding has a significant functional and aesthetic significance.

Functionality

Edge banding serves a variety of functions in furniture. First, it prevents moisture from reaching the core substance by sealing its edges. Second, it improves durability and robustness by increasing impact resistance. If solid wood Edge banding tape pvc is employed, it can improve the overall robustness of the furniture.

Aesthetics

Edge banding tape pvc has the aesthetic benefit of covering rough edges and creating a smooth surface that matches the top and sides. You may also use rounded corners to soften harsh edges.

Where Is Edge Banding Used?

Edge banding in furniture can be seen in a variety of settings, depending on the overall material characteristics.

Edge banding is rarely used on solid wood goods, except in locations where solid wood cannot be utilized. For example, cabinet doors are frequently composed of veneer-core plywood or MDF.

Despite employing real wood for cabinet sides and drawer fronts, many consumers prefer laminate tops. These tops require edge banding.

Luyao applies edge banding in unexpected places, such as plywood bed slats. Why? Fully enclosed bed slats can assist to avoid bedbug infestations.

Where is edge banding not used?

Luyao does not employ edge banding on cabinet backs or drawer bottoms since they are already immersed (sealed) in grooves. Similarly, we do not apply edge banding to interior plywood drawer components since it does not provide value.

It is worth mentioning that some manufacturers do not apply edge banding where it is required, such as the bottom and rear borders of plywood cabinets. This is important since even minor amounts of moisture can harm unsealed furniture.

What are the materials used for edge banding?

Edge bands may be created with a variety of materials. Here, we will look at a few typical possibilities.

PVC

PVC is the most used material for edge banding, particularly on cabinet tops. Advantages: Low cost, durability, and longevity. It requires no post-processing. Repairs are straightforward, but the procedure might be time-consuming. Disadvantages: Not recyclable or biodegradable; if a flaw appears, it cannot be fixed. (Note: ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is an environmentally acceptable alternative to PVC since it is recyclable and safe to incinerate.)

For PVC, we usually prefer 3mm edge bands since they bind cleanly and faster, offering superior adherence. An further advantage is the ability to generate elegantly rounded edges and a softer look. Generally, we advise against using 0.5mm edge bands since the edges are excessively sharp.

Solid Wood

Many woodworking firms continue to use solid wood for cabinet tops. It is long-lasting, recyclable, easy to repair and refinish, and provides great structural strength and stiffness at a reasonable cost.

Advantages: More resistant to chipping than veneer edge banding. It has a stronger adhesive than veneer and PVC, making it less prone to delaminate. It also offers extra dimensional support for plywood and MDF. The production method is carbon neutral. Disadvantages: More difficult to utilize with curves.

We provide solid wood edge banding in a variety of thicknesses for both indoor and outdoor applications.

For solid wood cabinet tops, we propose 9.5mm edge banding.

As previously stated, Luyao believes that internally attaching solid wood edge banding to laminate tops is the best solution. Why? Because, in our experience, it is quite durable and seldom requires further maintenance.

Veneer

Veneer is the most often used edge banding material for plywood cabinet sides, drawer fronts, and MDF wardrobe doors. It is formed of thin slices of wood, usually oak, maple, ash, walnut, birch, or mahogany, bound together using finger joints.

Veneer normally has a heat-sensitive adhesive backing and is available in a variety of thicknesses, therefore it is critical to choose the proper thickness based on the application.

Advantages include an attractive look, durability, and great strength. Provides a clean solid wood appearance and is pre-sanded to absorb stains and finishes, precisely complementing your existing wood. Disadvantages: Not heat resistant. Avoid usage near hot sources. May not operate well in high-traffic settings.

How does Edge banding tape pvc work?

According to the RA Learning Center, there are at least four ways to apply Edge banding tape pvc. Each approach has a lot to say, but here’s a quick rundown of application methods and materials.

  • Hot melt adhesive
  • Hot air/laser
  • Iron-on method
  • Laser edge banding

Other Considerations

Delamination Issues

Without a doubt, edge banding is crucial for most campus and dormitory furniture. If not applied correctly or if used improperly in critical areas, it can lead to significant maintenance issues.

There may be delamination difficulties with furniture with edge banding. Why is this happening?

The adhesive might fail for a variety of reasons. Once this occurs, the edge banding may begin to tear away from the edges.

Delamination may also result from hard handling. For example, 0.5mm edge banding is inadequately impact-resistant. As a result, you should avoid using it at the front of cabinet sides. If you do, the edge banding may start to peel.

If your furniture begins to delaminate, we can fix it. Simply contact your local Luyao salesperson, and we will handle it for you.

Cost

For cost-sensitive jobs, we recommend utilizing PVC edge banding. This does not mean that the material is defective; rather, it is the result of fewer stages in the production process and reduced raw material prices.

Solid wood edge banding is more costly since it is labor-intensive and made of higher grade materials. We consider it a premium option due to the additional stages involved in the production process. As previously said, internal solid wood edge banding with laminate tops may be our strongest and most durable option.

Adhesives

We chose hot melt glue as our bonding solution since it is user-friendly and produces a good seal. We apply the glue to the edges while they are still hot, and then press the edge banding to the side.

Ambient temperature is critical in the edge banding application procedure. We need to alter the building’s temperature and materials. In other words, we require a warm atmosphere to promote optimum bonding. The inside of the structure should not be excessively chilly.

Finally, you’ll need a clean glue edge to ensure a smooth procedure. Luyao has excellent gear capable of improving and accurately aligning glue edges.

It is our obligation to correctly apply edge banding. When analyzing edge banding possibilities, you must make decisions as well.
