Acrylic Edge Band
If you’ve been sourcing edge banding for a while, you already know acrylic edge band isn’t just “another PVC alternative.” It’s the material people reach for when the panel surface needs to look like glass — deep, wet, mirror-finish gloss that PVC simply can’t replicate, no matter how thick the topcoat is.
What Acrylic Edge Band Actually Is
Acrylic edge banding — sometimes labeled PMMA edge band, sometimes “3D edge banding,” sometimes “high gloss acrylic edging” — is an extruded edge profile made from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), the same family of polymers used in optical-grade plastics.
Why it matters: PMMA has a refractive index close to that of glass. When you co-extrude a transparent PMMA top layer over a colored or printed base layer, light refracts through the surface as it does through automotive paint or piano lacquer. That’s the “3D depth effect” you see in showrooms — and it’s the biggest single reason kitchen and wardrobe designers specify acrylic over PVC for premium projects.
Our acrylic edge band is produced as a two-layer co-extrusion:
- Top layer: clear PMMA, 0.3–0.5 mm depending on the SKU
- Base layer: colored or wood-grain printed substrate

Where Acrylic Edge Band Belongs
(and Where It Doesn’t)
Acrylic is the right call for
- High-end kitchen cabinet doors (especially flat-panel modern designs)
- Wardrobe and closet system fronts where the client wants “lacquer look without the lacquer price”
- Reception desks, retail displays, hotel furniture
- Any project where the matching panel is high-gloss acrylic-faced MDF — you need the edge to match the face, and only acrylic edge band will give you continuous gloss
Acrylic is NOT the right call for
- Low-budget flat-pack furniture — the cost gap with PVC is real (acrylic runs roughly 2–3× the price of equivalent PVC)
- Curved or post-formed edges with very tight radii (acrylic is stiffer than PVC; below R8 you’ll get stress whitening)
- Outdoor furniture — PMMA holds UV better than PVC, but no edge band is rated for permanent outdoor exposure
- Heavy-impact commercial environments like school furniture — for that, ABS is a smarter choice

The domestic Chinese production is all over the map. A few operate genuine co-extrusion lines like we do, but most are repackaging laminated film and slapping an acrylic label on it. HOW to tell: request a cross-section sample and examine the layer interface at magnification. Co-extruded layers present a fused interface. Laminated products have a visible line of adhesive.

European customers especially really pushed our quality system in the late 80s, and that’s why our tolerance specs are to European norms nowadays.

- You send us your panel samples or color codes, plus the thicknesses and widths you need.
- We send free samples within 7 days (DHL or FedEx, your account or ours).
- You test them on your edgebander — gloss, color match, adhesion, trimming behavior.
- We talk volumes, terms, lead times.
- First production order usually ships 20–25 days after PO and color approval.
We don’t chase with the hard sell. If the samples are not suitable, tell us why and we will either modify the samples or suggest that you use the services of someone else. The edge banding trade is tight enough that your name is your bond.
