What Is Hot Melt Glue for Edge Banding
The hot melt adhesive for edge banding is a technical thermoplastic or thermoset adhesive which attaches an edge banding strip of PVC, ABS, acrylic, melamine, or finish to the rough edges of particleboard, MDF, or plywood.
Hot Melt Glue for Edge Banding is kept inside the edge banding machine in a heated tank, or pre-melting tank. A thin film (usually 120–250 g/m²) is placed by rollers or channel nozzles on the edge of the board or on the back of the edge banding strip. Then pressure rollers downstream press the edge banding strip tightly onto the board during the open time of the glue. For EVA, open time is usually 3-6 seconds, and for PUR, open time is generally 30-60 seconds.
Three things are above all important to be achieved in a short period of building:
- Wetting properties – the rate at which a molten adhesive flows into the porous edges of the substrate
- Open time is the time that the adhesive is accessible for bonding before the surface material forms a skin.
- Cure rate – the rate at which the bond strength attains a workable strength following pressing.
A good adhesive in that respect makes for quite clean and crisp bond lines and high scrap rates are not observed.
Why Adhesive Choice Determines Edge Banding Quality
The adhesive — not the tape — is the most common root cause of edge banding defects in furniture production. A premium PVC tape on a mismatched glue will still fail; a mid-range tape on the right Hot Melt Glue for Edge Banding will outperform expectations.

Types of Hot Melt Adhesives for Edge Banding
EVA is the base material – around 70% of the fabrication of edge banding around the world is EVA.
PUR is a premium option as it reacts with moisture in the air to cure to a thermoset material (it will not remelt), resulting in an nearly invisible line of adhesive.

PUR requires equipment change. A normal EVA Hot Melt Glue for Edge Banding pot will ruin the PUR in a matter of hours — moisture in the ambient air gets inside the pot and cure the glue in a solid block. PUR must be processed on a closed pre-melter (Henkel Nordson DuraPUR, Robatech RobaPUR, etc.) with nitrogen blanketing or with a tank-on-demand system.

Our EVA hot melt adhesive granules are bagged in 25 kg moisture-proof bags and are suitable for use with automatic feeders. They can be used with roller glue systems on Brandt, Nanxing, KDT and Cehisa machines; LY-105 is also suitable for slot/roller on Homag KAL series, Biesse Akron/Stream, SCM Olimpic/Stefani and IMA Combima. Homag slotnozzle machines need the glue viscosity 40,000-55,000 mPa. s.
