Although PUR edgebanding adhesives are reactive products and require special application equipment (rather similar to the way that two-component paint products require special application equipment), the resulting bond is virtually indestructible. The adhesive continues to strengthen for 24-48 hours as the curing reaction proceeds therebycreating bonds that can resist even the most demanding environmental conditions.

How to Apply Hot Melt Glue for Edge Banding

Step 1: Temperature Control

Keep the glue tank temperature within the advised range given your hot melt glue formulation. EVA hotmelt is generally applied at 160-180°C, while PUR solutions are optimal at 120-140°C. Check the real glue temperature with a calibrated thermometer, since the displayed temperature is not always the real temperature of the adhesive.

Don’t overheat; high temperatures can break down the adhesive, resulting in charring, discoloration and weakened bonding performance. Too low temperature also leads to poor flow and weak bonding. Regular cleaning of the tanks will help eliminate cross contamination, which could influence the performance of the adhesive.

Step 2: Glue Dosage Determination

There is enough hot melt glue to make the edge banding stick with full coverage of the contact surface of the edge banding, but not so much hot melt glue that there is a squeeze out. The appropriate glue quantity varies on the thickness of the material of the edge banding and the quality of the substrate surface. As a rule of thumb, use 80-150g of adhesive per square meter of edge surface.
For thin edge banding (0,4-1mm) – apply the lighter end of the range. Higher application rates are recommended for thicker edge banding (2-3mm) and porous substrates. Frequent monitoring of glue line consistency quality will prevent starvation of adhesive or too much adhesive.

Step 3 Get pressing and cooling down

Ensure suitable pressing immediately after applying glue to make a good contact between the edge banding and substrate. The pressure rollers of edm edge banding machine should be adjusted suitably according to the thickness of material to ensure uniform pressure on the entire edge. When pressure is too low, bonds are weak and may delaminate.
Do not peel off or cut the banding Allow it to cool down sufficiently. Although the hot melt glue solidifies (in seconds), full bond strength develops in a matter of minutes. No stress should be applied to the newly applied edge banding until the adhesive is completely cooled and hardened. Be aware that for PUR adhesives the chemical reaction behind the bonding continues for another 24 to 48 hours, further strengthening the bond.
