Edge banding by width
Whether you are purchasing edging for MDF, plywood, particleboard, cabinets, furniture or interior panels, choosing the correct edge banding width helps reduce trimming waste and creates a cleaner finished edge.
Different Width Edge Banding To Choose
The seven sizes below are among the most useful dimensions for customers purchasing edge banding in bulk.

9mm edge banding
This is especially beneficial in cases where the substrate is thin or the edge coverage needed is minimal. Thin edge banding is also good for parts with limited edge exposure or where overhang would necessitate excessive trimming.
12mm edge banding
It may be a practical option for furniture parts and panels applications on the small side for which a wider strip is overkill.
For producers dealing with multiple panel sizes, 12mm can also be offered as part of a mixed-width purchasing program.

18mm edge banding
It is commonly applied to furniture panels at the 18mm size, but the right edge banding width always need to be calculated from the real board size and the trimming amount, not from the panel thickness only.
20mm edge banding
This small variation may come in handy if the finished panel needs extra trimming allowance, or if the manufacturer’s process for cutting and edging a wider strip.

22mm edge banding
22 mm edge banding is another popular size for furniture, especially application for 18~20mm boards when they/table require a little more edge coverage.
The additional width allows a useful trimming margin at the same time the consumption of material is relatively controlled.
30mm edge banding
30mm edge banding trends towards the larger size in common furniture edging.
It is handy if the exposed board edge is thicker, if more trimming allowance is required, or for aesthetic reasons a wider visual edge is needed.

Edge Banding Width at Glance
Conversion reference: 1 inch = 25.4mm; 1 foot = 304.8mm; 1 mil = 0.001 inch.
| Width | Inch / in | Foot / ft | Mil | Typical Application |
| 9mm | 0.3543 in | 0.0295 ft | 354.3 mil | Thin panels, narrow boards |
| 12mm | 0.4724 in | 0.0394 ft | 472.4 mil | Small furniture panels |
| 18mm | 0.7087 in | 0.0591 ft | 708.7 mil | Common cabinet and furniture panels |
| 20mm | 0.7874 in | 0.0656 ft | 787.4 mil | Furniture and cabinet applications |
| 22mm | 0.8661 in | 0.0722 ft | 866.1 mil | 18–20mm panel applications |
| 30mm | 1.1811 in | 0.0984 ft | 1,181.1 mil | Thick panels and wider exposed edges |
| 40mm | 1.5748 in | 0.1312 ft | 1,574.8 mil | Thick panels, doors and special applications |

Note: The width of a strip of edge banding is not the same as the thickness of the edge banding. Width refers to how wide the strip is across the edge of the board, thickness refers to how thick is the material of the strip.
Custom Edge Banding Width
You can specify:
- Edge banding width
- Edge banding thickness
- Material
- Color
- Surface texture
- Gloss level
- Roll length
- Packaging
- Private label
- Application requirements
Our Custom Edge Banding service is designed for manufacturers that need more than a standard catalog size. We can work from board samples, color samples, drawings or your existing edge banding specifications.
Custom Width Examples
A custom order does not have to be an unusual material. It can simply be a non-standard width such as:
- 15mm
- 16mm
- 19mm
- 21mm
- 23mm
- 25mm
- 28mm
- 32mm
- 35mm
- 45mm
- 50mm
- 60mm
- 70mm
- 80mm
- 90mm
- 100mm
- 110mm
- 120mm
If you have a width that is not listed above, send us the required dimension and we can check production feasibility.
How to Choose the Right Edge Banding Width
Consider the material
PVC, ABS, acrylic, melamine and veneer edge banding may act differently while trimming and finishing.
Consider the final edge design
A typical cabinet edge might call for a fairly narrow band, but a thicker decorative panel or unusual piece of furniture might require a wider strip.
Consider the edge banding machine
Automatic edgebanders can have particular needs concerning feeding, pressure, trimming and finishing operations.
The width should be compatible with the guide and trimmer of your machine.
Allow enough trimming margin
There should be enough material on the edging for a clean cut.
Narrow strip selection may yield insufficient coverage after applying and trimming.
Measure the actual board thickness
Verify the actual thickness of the board not relying only on the nominal thickness.
An 18mm board for example may have a slightly different actual dimension due to its construction and manufacturing tolerance.
